Focus Better at Work
Deep work—focused, uninterrupted time on important tasks—is increasingly rare in a world of notifications and meetings. Improving focus is a skill you can build. This guide covers environment, habits, and boundaries so you can focus better at work.
Reduce distractions
Turn off nonessential notifications. Use Do Not Disturb or focus mode during deep work. Keep your phone out of sight or in another room. Close unnecessary browser tabs and apps. Let colleagues know when you are in a focus block so they do not interrupt. Small changes add up.
Schedule focus blocks
Block 1–2 hours for your most important work. Do it when your energy is highest (often morning). Use a timer (e.g. 25–50 minutes work, 5–10 minutes break) to stay on track. Protect these blocks like meetings; do not give them away unless necessary.
Protect your energy and wellbeing
Focus suffers when you are tired or stressed. Use our Burnout & Stress Self-Check to reflect on your stress and burnout levels. Protect sleep, take breaks, and avoid back-to-back meetings without recovery time. Use our Interview Prep AI to prepare for interviews in focused blocks instead of last-minute cramming.
